“RF Burns”
Presented by Dr. Robert (“Bob”) Olsen, WA7WWP
Just about everybody who has been a radio amateur for any length of time has experienced an RF burn as a result of poor station RF grounding. RF burns can be deep, painful and slow healing.
Amateur radio operators are not the only people who can experience an RF burn. Because RF burns can also occur by contact with metallic objects near high powered AM broadcast stations they have also been of concern in the electric power industry regarding safety to crews working on overhead power transmission line structures.
What is an RF burn? What does it do to you? What makes you susceptible to an RF burn? Serious research into these questions is the subject of the program at the June meeting.
Dr. Bob Olsen (WA7WWP) is recently retired as Associate Dean of Engineering at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. His primary area of research has been in electromagnetic theory, and has resulted in publication of a number of technical papers in various peer reviewed journals.
Among the subjects of his study are propagation of electromagnetic waves and grounding. One of his more recent projects of interest to SARA has been an experimental study of RF burns.
Bob has his PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado (Boulder) and is a Fellow if the IEEE.
He is also the brother-in-law of Jim K2PK.
