Early Air Navagation
by Jim Silva, KC2ZVK
Early air navigation was done using a compass, maps, and lots of landmarks. When Charles Lindbergh successfully crossed the Atlanticsolo in 1927, he opted for additional gasoline in favor of an “unreliable” radio. When Pan American Airways began operations between Key West and Havana in 1927, there were no landmarks, and in the absence of radio communications, frequent tropical storms led to disastrous consequences. In many ways, radio and air transport grew up together. This presentation will describe some of the equipment and methods used in early air navigation, particularly early direction finding systems.
If Niskayuna High School cancels evening classes and activities the SARA meeting will normally also be cancelled and possibly rescheduled. Listen in on the SARA 147.060 repeater for meeting status information and whether it is to be rescheduled.
The SARA meeting is held in the Little Theatre of the Niskayuna High School on Balltown Road. Attendees should enter the school through the cafeteria entrance located on the side of the school, adjacent to the Nott Street Extension school parking lot.
