Radio Orienteering: The On-Foot Foxhunt
Speaker: Bob Frey, WA6EZV
Abstract:
Bob will cover the following topics: The sport of Radio Orienteering (RO) and Amateur Radio Direction Finding (ARDF), courses and events, getting started on the cheap, receivers for 2 and 80 meters, directional antennas, attenuators, “Foxes” for 2 and 80 meters, and miscellaneous equipment (e.g., maps and compass).
About our speaker:
Bob Frey, WA6EZV, is from Hamilton, OH, and is a retired chemist, and for 25 years was an IT network engineer. He was first licensed in 1968, and now holds an extra class license. His interests include contesting, DX, digital modes, project building, foxhunting, and ARDF.
Bob currently has 349 countries confirmed with DXCC on 8 Bands and three modes.
He has been active for over 50 years as a mobile foxhunter and has been a moderator or speaker for the foxhunt forum at the Dayton Hamvention for over 30 years.
Bob has participated in 22 Radio-Orienteering (ARDF) US National Championships and 4 World Championships including China, the Slovak Republic, Bulgaria and South Korea. He has also co-chaired three National Championships (2003, 2010, 2017).
He is a five-time US ARDF national champion – three times on 2 meters and twice on 80 meters. He was also a category M70 (males ages 70 and older, 3 or 4 foxes) gold medalist on 2 and 80 meters in 2023.
In addition, Bob has been an ARRL Volunteer Examiner, DXCC Field Checker, HF Awards Manager, and member of ARRL Radio-Orienteering/ARDF subcommittee.
Note: The meeting location is 309 Alplaus Ave, Alplaus, NY, and the building is at the corner of Alplaus Avenue and Bruce Drive. Please park in the paved lot adjacent to this building. Do not park in the restricted area in front of the building that houses the fire trucks. We will meet in the Multipurpose Room (entrance is on the North side of this building).
