Going QRP – What I’ve Learned and How it has Made Me a Better Operator

Speaker: Manny Schulman NF2Q

Abstract:
Manny will discuss his experience with QRP operation and give a demonstration based on an ICOM IC-705 rig and two antenna systems.

About our speaker:

Manny served in the US Army Aviation in 1980s, became a paramedic in 1989, and served as a police officer from 1990 to 2011. Since retiring from the police force in 2011, he has served as a nurse; he currently serves at Albany Medical Center as a vascular nurse. He also works part time as a fixed-wing flight nurse, and previously worked in the emergency department for 7 years.

Like so many of us, Manny was Introduced to ham radio in high school, but never attempted getting licensed due to the Morse code requirement. Once the Morse code requirement was lifted, Manny studied for two weeks and took the technician exam, then a month later took the 5 wpm code test and became a tech+. He was introduced to HF by a ham and started studying for the 13 wpm code test, which he passed a month later at a SARA meeting. Soon after that, he passed the general exam and the 20 wpm code test at the RPI club, followed by passing the advanced and extra class exams. Manny inspired several Guilderland Police Officers to become ham radio operators – three got their technician license and one has an advanced class.

Manny’s hobbies include photography, scuba diving, metal detecting, sewing/computerized embroidery, 3D printing, biking, computer building, wood lathe work, flying model airplanes, ham radio, and anything else that catches his interest.

Manny has a YouTube channel, which can be found by searching “Manny Shulman”.

Note: The meeting location is 309 Alplaus Ave, Alplaus, NY, and the building is at the corner of Alplaus Avenue and Bruce Drive. Please park in the paved lot adjacent to this building. Do not park in the restricted area in front of the building that houses the fire trucks. We will meet in the Multipurpose Room (entrance is on the North side of this building).
